When we take the time and the effort to style our hair, maintain our health and put ourselves together, our spirits lift. And if there is anything we all need in this year 2021, it is an uplifting of our spirits.

So, here are the tips for achieving great hair. Not only will you look good, you’ll also feel great on the inside.

1. Keep your curly hair hydrated and moisturised: If you are spending most of the days indoors in cold and dry areas (winter), you probably have the heaters on always. This could lead to dry, brittle hair. You can keep your curly hair from drying out by spritzing lightly with water or a mixture of water and natural oils. If you are fortunate enough to be in a sunny area and you are spending a lot of time in the pool, remember to coat your afro/curly hair with natural oils, Vaseline or even conditioner before going in the pool. Then wash your hair thoroughly when you are done. When you do this, you get rid of the chlorine that’s especially damaging for afro curly hair. And then continue to condition and moisturise.

2. We often use a lot of products such as edge control gels, hair holding sprays, and serums to make our hair look nice. Many of these products have alcohol in them and can be bad for afro curly hair as it stops products and water from penetrating the hair. This can cause build up over time, which will not allow your hair to be properly moisturised. It is important that you wash your hair often to wash out excess styling products if you use them a lot. If you don’t have the time to wash all of your hair, you can go for a co-wash, which is the use of a conditioner to clean out the excess product. It is imperative to clean your hair, as leaving these products in the hair can cause dryness, which is a no-no for afro curly hair.

3. Condition your naturally curly hair: Most people tend to forget their regular hair care routine when they are very busy. No matter how busy you are, don’t forget to deep condition, or co-wash your hair between washes.

4. Use downtime for extra hair care: I always advise my clients to take advantage of any downtime to pamper themselves, their hair included. Take that time to do what you wouldn’t ordinarily do. For example, do something nice for your hair while reading your favourite book by the pool or while relaxing in a hammock. If there is a special product you’ve always wanted to use and never had the time, that is the perfect time to apply it to your hair and let it do its magic. Use that treatment or mask that you’ve always wanted to. Don’t forget that quality care effectively repairs your hair, nourishes it, and gives it the gloss and moisture it needs.

Visit your hairdresser often: Your hairstylist will help you get rid of dying tips and split ends, and help you determine what you need to do to keep your hair healthy. So, don’t ever neglect to pay regular visits to your hairdresser.

In conclusion

Haircare should never be neglected, not even when you are extremely busy. Nobody wants frizzy, dry and unhealthy hair, and this is why taking care of your hair is as important as taking care of any other part of your body.

So, take the time to do something nice for yourself. You are already beautiful on the inside. Now, let the exterior match the interior.
