Yay, it’s Christmas again.

So many parties. So many outings. So many activities.
And because of the abundance of activities, some of us sometimes forget to take proper care of our hair during this season. And you don’t ever not want to take care of afro/curly hair. Afro hair is beautiful in all its forms, but if you're going to get the best shine to your hair, you cannot relent on taking care of it. Christmas is not even enough of an excuse to not do the needful by your hair.
So, you need to continue taking care of your afro hair through Christmas the same way that you have done all year long.

So, time for reminders. This is how to take good care of your natural hair, Christmas time or otherwise.
Fill up on healthy meals

Nutritious meals are not only great for your body. They also do wonders for stronger, healthier hair. So, go ahead. Fill up on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and low-fat proteins. Also, eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (such as avocados, walnuts, and salmon) for a healthy scalp.
Get enough sleep

It is not just enough to eat well. Regular and adequate sleep is also another component of having healthy hair. Your body rejuvenates its tissues when you are sleeping. Science also shows that people who are sleep deprived hair suffer loss as the hair and follicle weaken due to physical stress. So, don’t let the excitement of this Christmas period interfere with your sleep. Aim for six to eight hours of sleep daily.
Don’t forget hydration

Water is your hair’s best friend. So, hydrate both from inside and outside. Drink as much water as you can (recommended volume is at least eight glasses of water daily). Also, apply water to your hair consistently, especially when detangling. You do know that afro hair is more susceptible to tangles and knots because of its curly nature. This is why detangling damp hair or while standing under a showerhead makes for an easier process. You can also arm yourself with a spray bottle of water for use every now and then.
Don’t throw out your wash day routine

Don’t forget to wash your afro hair as often as you did before, whether this is every week or every two weeks. And don’t forget to follow your proper wash day routine.
Use a sulfate-free shampoo
Most shampoos contain chemicals like sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium laureth sulfate, or ammonium lauryl sulphate, all of which cause dryness and breakage. This is why a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner is recommended.
Deep condition your hair

Deep conditioning your hair regularly makes for less damaged, softer, and healthier hair. For best results, use a clarifying shampoo just before deep conditioning. Want more protein balance? Add natural oils and honey to your conditioner.
Don’t forget your scalp

Due to product build-up, oils, and dirt, your scalp may occasionally get itchy. This is why it is crucial to cleanse your scalp regularly. Blocked pores make it hard for new hair to grow, and a dirty scalp can cause dandruff, fungal infections, and unhealthy hair. You don’t want that.
Don’t forget your oils

It is important to oil your hair frequently, as oils are essential to maintain and ensure the health of your hair. They either moisturise hair or seal in already existing moisture. Some of our favourite moisturising oils are avocado oil, olive oil, and coconut oil, while some of our favourite sealing oils are Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, and Jamaican black castor oil.
Don’t trash your satin bonnet or scarf

You must have heard about satin bonnets or scarves. You might even be in the habit of using one. If you were, don’t trash it during this festive period. You still need to keep your hair from tangling and breaking while sleeping. You may also want to invest in a silk or smooth satin pillowcase, for the very same purpose.
Don’t use your hairdryer so often

Afro-textured hair is really fragile, and there is always the risk of damaging the hair when heat is applied to it. We advise that you use heat a little less often during this festive period. Instead of using your hairdryer, let your hair air dry instead. It protects your hair from breaking excessively.
Cover your hair if the weather condition is harsh

Harsh weather can wear out afro hair, so if you are out in the rain or if it is windy or extremely cold, put on a bandana, head wrap, an umbrella or any other thing that protects your hair. This way, you avoid frizzy and unmanageable hair.
Don’t forget your wide tooth comb

Use combs that have wider, softer teeth for your natural hair. These kinds of combs have enough space between the rows and allow for an easier movement through your hair without tearing up your hair ends. One tip: Make sure your hair is damp before combing it. Another tip: Comb in sections, and not all at once.
In conclusion
I am sure there is nothing we’ve mentioned here that you have not heard of before. So, we are not teaching you anything new. We are simply reminding you not to forget to take care of your hair as you normally would.
And the great news is that taking care of your afro-textured hair is not so much of a hassle when you follow these rigorously. You will not only have great looking and healthier hair, but also have a most beautiful Christmas.
Happy holidays.
Stay beautiful.
